Past Project:
Farm/School Program
The Education Foundation supported this ground-breaking program started in 2002 by Henning Sehmsdorf and Elizabeth Simpson, whose nearby 50-acre biodynamic farm is an outdoor classroom that teaches students to be stewards of the earth as they learn about food “from seed to plate.” The program teaches children through innovative curriculum in the classroom, planting, nurturing and harvesting food in the farm and garden, and preparing healthy food to eat in the kitchen.

Past Project:
Fitness & Nature Trail
Apply named the Lopez Island Fitness and Ecology Trail or L.I.F.E. Trail, this 1-mile fitness and ecology trail on the 33-acre Lopez School campus offers nature, exercise and health for the whole community. Supported by the Education Foundation and designed in conjunction with local ecologists, the trail runs through three distinct ecosystems and provides students and residents lessons in biology, ecology, botany and natural history: this is Lopez before its wetlands were drained and forests felled more than a century ago.

Past Project:
Math Olympiad 2011
The Foundation supported the 5th grade Math Olympiad team which competed successfuly in Port Angeles. This annual event attracts teams from around the State and enriches the regular math program. The students practice after school to prepare for the contest and then spend a Saturday in May collaboratively finding solutions to difficult math problems.
“I really enjoyed the Math Olympiad because it gave us a chance to learn something new, work as a team and have fun. I can’t wait to do it again next year!”
- Jana Gruenwald

Past Project:
Middle School Trips
The Middle School traditionally has taken three-five day trips at the end of the year. Last year the Education Foundation helped fund the students’ experiential learning excursions to the Olympic Peninsula. The students learned about the native cultures, the geology and natural history of the Washington. It is a great way for the students to end the year and one of the highlights of their middle school experience.
“This trip was awesome. We got to explore tide pools, hang with friends, be outside and camp. It was so beautiful I thought I was dreaming!”
- Eddie Kramer

Past Project:
Science Lab Aquarium
The Foundation supported the purchase of a new saltwater aquarium for the school Science Lab. The aquarium allows students to observe and study marine life in a natural-like setting and provides hands-on science in areas such as biomes, adaptations, taxonomy, food webs, oceanography, and biochemistry.
“This wonderful salt water tank has made class a hands-on experience, that’s how I learn best. The new tank has made it possible to collect aquatic specimens for us to examine and record, my favorite part of this class.”
- Grant Fisher

Past Project:
Boat Building Project
Students built a Glouster Gull dory in one semester. They were guided by Steven Brouwer, professional boat builder in partnership with Kurt Jacobs, wood shop teacher. Students launched the boat on the last day of class.
"Building this boat was an excellent experience. I learned more about working with wood this semester than my entire life. It was an honor to work with Steven who was patient and understanding. I hope that this program can continue so others can have such a rich opportunity."
- Derek Cram
